History of Walkerville Council

Located in the central suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia, the Corporation of the Town of Walkerville, commonly known as the Town of Walkerville, is a compact local government area.

Represented by a mayor and eight councillors, the Town of Walkerville boasts the highest concentration of top earners in South Australia, earning it the title of “South Australia’s richest postcode” in 2016.

Established on 5 July 1855, the District Council of Walkerville emerged following a petition by local residents seeking autonomy from the larger District Council of Yatala, which was proclaimed in 1853. Initially encompassing the suburbs of Walkerville and Gilberton, the district expanded within months to include Medindie and North Walkerville (now part of Walkerville proper, east of Fuller Street). The district’s boundaries remained unchanged until 1970, when Vale Park was annexed from the City of Enfield.

In its formative years, council meetings convened in a room at the local pub, the Sussex Arms. In 1893, the council relocated across Stephen Terrace to its current site adjacent to the Walkerville Town Hall on Walkerville Terrace, Gilberton.

Elevated to corporate town status on 1 October 1944, the municipality officially became the Town of Walkerville.
