History of Unley Council

Nestled in the Adelaide metropolitan region lies the City of Unley, a vibrant local government area situated just south of the bustling Adelaide city center.

The inception of the Corporate Town of Unley dates back to 1871, catalyzed by a petition signed by 2,000 residents from various towns including Unley, Parkside, Black Forest, Goodwood, and Fullarton. This petition sought the establishment of their own municipality, leading to the town’s formation and subsequent separation from the District Council of Mitcham. The construction of the inaugural town hall in 1880 marked a pivotal moment in Unley’s administrative landscape. Achieving city status in 1906, it became the third municipality in the state to do so, assuming the identity of the current City of Unley.

Enriched by the traditional lands of the Kaurna people, the City of Unley resonates with historical significance, boasting a distinctive character and inviting atmosphere, all within a stone’s throw from Adelaide’s bustling urban core.

In 2011, Mayor Lachlan Clyne faced legal issues, including allegations of fraud. However, all charges against him were dismissed in 2012. Subsequently, the Police Ombudsman recommended internal disciplinary action against the police officer responsible for the failed investigation.
