History of Port Adelaide Enfield Council

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield (PAE) is one of the largest metropolitan councils in South Australia, formed on 26 March 1996 through the merger of the City of Port Adelaide and the City of Enfield. It covers an area of 97 km², stretching from the River Torrens to Outer Harbor. The region is home to several historic buildings and landmarks, with Port Adelaide known as the History Precinct, housing the Maritime Museum, National Railway Museum, and Aviation Museum.

Port Adelaide’s origins date back to 1855 when it was declared a Corporate Town. It grew significantly between 1884 and 1900 as five nearby district councils were merged with it. In 1901, Port Adelaide was officially proclaimed a city. The port area has played a crucial role in the city’s growth and is central to its historical significance.

The City of Enfield, originally known as the District Council of Yatala South, was formed in 1868. It became Enfield Council in 1933, achieving municipal status in 1944, and was proclaimed a city in 1953 following a post-war population boom. In 1996, it joined with Port Adelaide to create the modern City of Port Adelaide Enfield. The city is governed by Mayor Claire Boan and 17 ward councillors, who represent the community at council meetings.
