History of Prospect Council

The City of Prospect is an inner urban local government area in Adelaide, South Australia, established in 1872. Covering less than 8 square kilometers, it is one of the smallest and oldest local government bodies in the state. The area is dominated by the suburb of Prospect, which makes up two-thirds of the council area. Known for its growing population of young professionals, the suburb has become a vibrant urban community.

Before European settlement in 1838, the Prospect area was home to the Kaurna people. When settlers arrived, the locality was named “Prospect” by Colonel William Light for its “beautiful prospect” of well-timbered land. In 1838, George Fife Angas and the Mechanics Land Company made significant land purchases, leading to the subdivision and creation of Prospect Village. The dry soil initially made gardening difficult, but the area’s proximity to Adelaide helped it grow.

In 1872, after separating from the District Council of Yatala South, the District Council of Prospect was formed following lobbying by local residents. The 1880s saw a land boom, but a collapse in the 1890s led to a drop in land values. In 1933, the council gained municipal status, becoming the Corporation of the Town of Prospect, which continues to thrive as an important part of Adelaide’s urban landscape.
